SUMMARY:Research Meets Development: Drought Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa
DESCRIPTION:A seven-part lecture series on interdependence of drought\, food security\, conflict and migration\, organized by UNCCD in cooperation with scientific and development partners\, will take place in Bonn between 6 April and 13 July 2017. The series will focus on the role that institutional cooperation and continued dialog between stakeholders can play in anticipating\, preventing and mitigating the effects of drought on vulnerable rural populations. The event will offer a platform for the representatives of scientific institutions\, development agencies\, governments\, NGOs and the civil society to exchange ideas and present recommendations on how to improve coordination between partners and ensure concerted global effort to minimize the effects of drought and associated risks. \nParticipants will discuss topics such as creating greater resilience to drought by using pro-active risk-based approaches\, strengthening vulnerable communities against extreme weather events through social protection programs\, developing drought-resilient crops to achieve greater agricultural outputs without increasing environmental impacts\, addressing climate challenges through flexible water governance and adapting development work to the context of pastoral societies. \nThe event is organized in the margins of the “One World – No Hunger” Initiative by the UNCCD\, the German Development Institute (DIE)\, the University of Bonn\, German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ)\, the Center of Development Research (ZEF)\, Deutsche Welle (DW)\, the Reconstruction Credit Institute (KfW) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). \nClick here for more information. \n

SUMMARY:International Training Course on Combating Desertification\, 22-26 May 2017\, Turkey
DESCRIPTION:Turkey’s General Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion invites participants from the eligible countries of Eastern Europe\, Caucasus and Central Asia to take part in the International Training Course on Combating Desertification\, which will take place on 22-26 May 2017 in Konya-Mersin\, Turkey. The course is open to two representatives per country and is aimed at related decision makers\, forest engineers and NGO’s involved in the management of environmental problems related to desertification\, land degradation\, afforestation\, erosion control and forestry. \nAs a predominantly arid and semi-arid country\, Turkey has become a leader in land management\, especially in areas vulnerable to drought. The country has invested heavily in rehabilitating a wide variety of terrestrial ecosystems\, with national activities often planned at the watershed scale. Success can be attributed to an integrated\, participatory approach that strengthens the engagement and capacity of local people. Land governance has evolved to create the necessary conditions  and legal environment for the widespread implementation of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices. Turkey has also established itself as a leader in capacity building by investing in the training and skills development of civil society and local authorities\, particularly in Africa\, Central Asia and the Eastern Europe. \nThe training course is conducted under the Ankara Initiative\, which has been launched to strengthen the implementation of the UNCCD from 2016 to 2019. The Initiative supports the global sustainable development agenda and leverages the lessons learned from Turkey’s past experience and approaches to land management. \nClick her to register and learn more \n
